Acta Materialia is a peer-reviewed scientific journal published twenty times per year. It is published online by Elsevier on behalf of Acta Materialia Inc. The Coordinating Editor is Subhash Mahajan (Arizona State University). ASM International and American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers are listed as sponsors, or authors of Acta Materialia.[1][2]

The focus of this journal is the structure and the properties of materials. The journal publishes original papers and commissioned reviews. Also covered are microstructure of materials, electronic and chemical properties, and understanding atomic and molecular arrangements of materials.[1]

Although the journal is published in English, some summaries are in French or German.[2]

Further information

Scope

Articles in Acta Materialia are focused on mechanical or functional behavior of inorganic solids. Coverage includes all materials length scales, from macro to nanostructures. Such a focus encompasses understanding inorganic solid properties through theory, experimentation, simulation and modeling, describing mechanisms responsible for the synthesis and processing of materials, and characterizing the structure and chemistry of materials.[1]

Publishing history

The journal is a continuation of Acta Metallurgica et Materialia and incorporates the journal formerly entitled Nanostructured Materials. By May 2006, Scripta Materialia was redesigned into a "letters" format and has become a companion journal to Acta Materialia, publishing rapid communications.[3][4][5][6]

Scripta Materialia

Scripta Materialia is a peer reviewed, scientific "Letters" journal of Acta Materialia. As such, it is formatted for rapid publishing of short communications, which are original research articles in contrast to incremental research. In this regard the focus is on novel properties, or substantially improved properties of materials. Specific materials discussed are metals, ceramics and semiconductors at all length scales, and published research endeavors explore the functional or mechanical behavior of these materials. Articles tend to focus on the materials science and engineering aspects of discovery, characterization, development (including advances), structure, chemistry, theory, experiment, modeling, simulation, physics processes (thermodynamics, mechanics, etc.), synthesis, processing (production), mechanisms, and control.

Another function of Scripta Materialia is to publish comments on papers published in both Acta Materialia and Scripta Materialia. Furthermore, guest editors coordinate the section entitled "Viewpoint Sets" which are a set of invited short articles. The Coordinating Editor is Subhash Mahajan (Arizona State University).[9]
